Desmond Tutu said\u00a0\u201cIf you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And,\u00a0\u201cIf an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t even talk about wicked senses of humour! (Things that are not too kosher to say in the work-place)<\/p>\n

Should we feel fearful about being policed online? Is Facebook intrusion an unwarranted invasion of our privacy? I thought this was a democracy, and it was okay to have a personality!<\/p>\n

But I think this is useful advice, coming from \u201cThinking out loud\u201d, who commented on the firing of Mike Crowder, a former cleaning-crew supervisor at the\u00a0University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Crowder\u00a0was terminated after sharing on Facebook that \u00a0former disgraced senator, Mike Duffy, had been \u201cpompous and arrogant.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to \u201cThinking out loud\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen are people going to learn\u00a0<\/em>(Facebook)<\/em>\u00a0FB is a dangerous place to vent anything about what you see and hear? \u00a0Millions of people instantly hear and see what you have to say or show, whether true or not. \u00a0Gone are the days when your own stupidity stayed between you and your immediate buddies who saw you and had a laugh with you only to be forgotten as time goes by. \u00a0Now it is stored forever deep inside the nebulous archives of FB, Google and numerous other data collectors only to be dished up years later, out of context and as a negative \u201cexcuse\u201d to inform people you are not fit for your job or unfit for public office. \u00a0Wake up sheeple! Big brother is watching and storing your every move. Get used to the idea.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hmmm. \u00a0Since I have a blog, I\u2019ve got to be careful. \u00a0I\u2019ve got to watch what I say, right?\u00a0\u00a0I will.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0I believe that with freedom of speech comes responsibility. \u00a0I\u2019m an enormously responsible person! \u00a0<\/strong>However, I do believe it would be better to\u00a0admit to \u2018Big Brother\u2019 what my world-vision is. \u00a0It will save it the trouble of figuring it out.<\/p>\n

Dear Big brother,<\/p>\n

I am not conservative in my beliefs. \u00a0However, last time I checked, it was OKAY to hold peaceful and differing political beliefs. \u00a0That is what we\u2019re trying to cultivate in some parts of the world, right? \u00a0Tolerance and peace.<\/p>\n

Just for the record, I don\u2019t believe in war and I abhor violence. \u00a0I support gay marriage, abortion and free health care. \u00a0Indeed, these are three of the reasons that compelled me to move to Canada in 2003. \u00a0I found this country to be spectacularly progressive.<\/p>\n

I love Russel Brand,\u00a0Bill Maher, Jon Stewart and other irreverent comedians. \u00a0I find them chock-full of common-sense!<\/p>\n

Does that make me a bad person? \u00a0NO. \u00a0Does that make me a compassionate person? YES! Does that mean I have a sense of humour? \u00a0YES! \u00a0\u00a0Does that make me unprofessional or unfit to hold office? \u00a0NO. \u00a0Does it mean I want the freedom to be myself? \u00a0YES!<\/p>\n

As an inhabitant of this planet, I am responsible for what goes on in it. \u00a0I share that responsibility with others. \u00a0So, I\u2019d rather be thoughtful and articulate than ignorant and silent. \u00a0My sincere hope is that others will join me in doing so, to create a better world.<\/p>\n

I see that others already do. \u00a0I am kindly asking you to allow people to live their truths and voice their opinions, without fear. \u00a0We\u2019d ideally like to live in conflict-free, environmentally sustainable democracies. \u00a0Not hypocrisies.<\/strong><\/p>\n
