We\u2019ve all had those dreams: \u00a0We\u2019re SOMEBODY BIG! \u00a0We look damn good! \u00a0We\u2019re excelling in some field. \u00a0We\u2019re recognized as experts and people LOVE US! \u00a0No, LOOOOOVE us! \u00a0We\u2019re celebrities and it\u2019s fun!<\/p>\n

Truthfully, I never envisioned that kind of life for myself. \u00a0I simply could not! \u00a0I was born and raised in Trinidad, where the most amount of wealth I saw was in Westmoorings. \u00a0For those of you who don\u2019t know the island, that\u2019s commonly referred to as the \u201cWhite people\u201d area. \u00a0People in general there are very light-skinned ,and can afford luxuries such as private security. \u00a0They also have access to yachts and thousand-dollar beauty therapy treatments. \u00a0By now you would have guessed these are tremendously atypical things for average Trinidadians.<\/p>\n

I became aware of the Westmoorings lifestyle, when I took a body-therapy course at a local spa. (Another one of my hidden talents:\u00a0 I know how to give professional massages) \u00a0The order and affluence that I witnessed there, had hitherto only existed in my glimpses of America. \u00a0I did want to be famous, but I couldn\u2019t envision all the pomp and splendour associated with American celebrity. \u00a0I saw myself, rather, in the mould of Jackie Collins or V.S. Naipaul.\u00a0 (The latter was from Trinidad, so I saw that as the apex of what I could achieve at the time)\u00a0 As a teenager,\u00a0 I dreamt of being a famous author, known and recognized for my work. \u00a0I lived comfortably rather than extravagantly, and I had a happy life. \u00a0Do I still want those things?<\/p>\n

Absolutely.\u00a0 Great wealth will not make me or anyone really happy. \u00a0Michael Jackson\u2019s millions could not convince him he was externally beautiful. \u00a0His inner demons ravaged him. \u00a0I\u2019ve had similar moments when I\u2019m crying and I realise that the size of the television screen will not comfort me. \u00a0Whether it\u2019s a 50-inch plasma TV or an antiquated 20-inch set makes no difference; I will STILL hurt.<\/p>\n

It does piss me off, however, to see Snooki making more money than me. \u00a0Seriously folks? \u00a0Being stupid gets you $150,000.00 an episode? \u00a0And a $25,000.00 appearance fee? \u00a0And RUTGERS UNIVERSITY will pay you to speak! \u00a0And then DEFEND it\u2019s decision! \u00a0Ahhhh! \u00a0It\u2019s a real travesty when according to\u00a0Sting<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cYou can become famous by sticking your dick in Macy\u2019s window.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/em>We\u2019ve gone from merit to madness!<\/p>\n

In\u00a0the good old days, celebrity was earned. \u00a0You could be really fucked up, but you had to be talented. \u00a0Now you can be simply fucked up and that\u2019s considered a talent! \u00a0Consider the Kardashians and the cast of Jersey Shore. \u00a0The dumber you are, the more humorous you seem. \u00a0Just keep in shape, wear fashionable clothing, style yourself in a conventionally attractive manner, and your simian shenanigans will seem socially acceptable.<\/p>\n

So why do people want to be famous? \u00a0Aside from the accompanying fantasies of wealth, why do\u00a0we<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>want to become famous?\u00a0 \u00a0Here\u2019s what\u00a0Robert Fuller\u00a0Ph.D<\/a>.\u00a0 has to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a world that sees people as somebodies and nobodies, indignities abound. \u00a0The primary source of man-made indignity is rankism. \u00a0By analogy with racism\u00a0and sexism, rankism is defined as what somebodies do to nobodies. \u00a0To be sure, not all somebodies abuse their power advantage. \u00a0We\u2019ve all known somebodies who are devoted to serving others and wouldn\u2019t think of abusing their rank\u2026On the other hand, most of us, even quasi-somebodies, have gotten a taste of the indignities routinely visited upon those taken for nobodies\u2026Nobodies\u00a0are marginalized to the point of invisibility. \u00a0Since humans are social creatures, banishment carries a threat of being deprived of social and material resources critical to health and happiness, and sometimes to survival itself\u2026<\/em>Fame promises an escape from whatever ghetto we\u2019re in, real or imagined<\/em><\/strong>..<\/em>The more recognition we can amass, the less likely it is that anyone will dare to nobody us.\u201c<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

So we\u2019re\u00a0protecting\u00a0<\/em>ourselves. \u00a0We\u2019re smarter than we think we are. \u00a0 We subconsciously figure out how society works, even before we\u2019re fully self-actualized. \u00a0We also really need recognition.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/em>Recognition is to the self what food is to the body\u2026Too little or too much can be harmful.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a spiritual need. \u00a0It starts from childhood. \u00a0I\u2019ve seen my friend\u2019s kid, Chase Dundas, respond to his father\u2019s instructions. \u00a0Since he was able to speak, his dad Roger has had him repeat\u00a0\u201cI am kind, I am smart, I am important.\u201d \u00a0<\/em>Chase\u2019s face lights up with glee, even though he really can\u2019t pronounce the word \u2018important.\u2019 \u00a0But he gets it. \u00a0He giggles with understanding and shines brighter and happier, than he did before hearing it. \u00a0He won\u2019t suffer the deprivation that others unfortunately have to endure.<\/p>\n

BE ALL THAT YOU CAN BE<\/h2>\n

\u00a0Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can\u2019t practice any other virtue consistently \u2013Maya Angelou.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dream big. \u00a0The biggest dream that you can dream. \u00a0Dreams can be manifested on this physical plane. \u00a0Nothing is guaranteed, but it is entirely of possibility. \u00a0Apply all the knowledge and persistence that you can\u2013something is\u00a0bound\u00a0<\/em>to happen either way. \u00a0You\u2019ll always be on the right path once you live in accordance with your truth.<\/p>\n

I would encourage people to take heed of the fact that\u00a0we are\u00a0spirits<\/em>. \u00a0There are needs of ours that can\u2019t be met by the physical manifestations of the world. \u00a0Loving people, earnestly and extravagantly, is what brings true satisfaction. \u00a0Love is the most powerful force on the planet, and the one we need the most.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s okay to want to be rich and famous. \u00a0The world we live in was not created overnight, and inequality has always been a feature of it. \u00a0It is detestable, but such is life. \u00a0If you have a lot of wealth, you have a lot of power. \u00a0If you\u2019re someone famous, you hold more sway over people\u2019s opinions than other people do. \u00a0It\u2019s not right, and it\u2019s not fair, but such is life. \u00a0I would rather that we heap attention upon people who have something of substance to say.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Something meaningful and inspirational. \u00a0Recognition that is merited. \u00a0Not attention bestowed upon people who behave worse than primates.<\/p>\n

We must remember, we don\u2019t need to be rich or famous to make a difference. \u00a0Or be somebody. \u00a0People can be somebodies\u00a0simply by being themselves. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>In the process they can become famous! \u00a0True power can emerge from the force of personality and beliefs. \u00a0Dr. Martin Luther King, \u00a0Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama are wonderful examples of this. \u00a0They crafted their lives in the moment, the same way we can. \u00a0They will be remembered long after the memory of Kim, Kanye and Snooki fade away from our collective consciousness.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d like to end with a quote that comes from the Spelling Bee of Canada founder, Julie Spence. \u00a0I originally interviewed her for an article that was published on\u00a0Byblacks.com<\/a>. \u00a0She says:<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone in life has a purpose. It\u2019s really not about you. It\u2019s about how you can help someone, and in turn, help yourself in the process. This is what I think about every day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
