It doesn\u2019t sound logical. \u00a0It really doesn\u2019t! \u00a0We\u2019ve been brought up to believe that animals just say \u201cRoof roof!\u201d \u00a0Or \u201cMoo moo!\u201d \u00a0\u201cQuack quack!\u201d \u00a0Or \u201cNeigh! Neigh!\u201d \u00a0And we vary how we interpret their sounds, according to our human languages. \u00a0But animals can communicate with human-beings and vice versa,\u00a0as evidenced by this video:<\/p>\n

In it, animal communicator Anna Breytenbach, soothes and calms a black leopard which has been abused. \u00a0It does not trust human beings. \u00a0After communicating with Anna, it becomes more at ease with it\u2019s human handlers, and emerges from the seclusion to which it has hitherto confined itself. \u00a0This majestic being just wanted to be respected and appreciated.<\/p>\n

Indigenous Hawaiians also communicate with sharks during a traditional way of fishing. \u00a0My good friend Mike Standup, is a Traditional Healer from the Mohawk nation of Kahnawahke. \u00a0He spent time with Native Hawaiians and they spoke to him about their techniques. \u00a0The fishermen paddle out to sea and then throw their nets overboard.\u00a0 Then, they take their paddles and start banging on the sides of the boats. \u00a0What sounds like a ruckus is actually more of a dinner-call: \u00a0Sharks respond to the vibrations in the water and gather around the boats. \u00a0They then manoeuvre the schools of fish into the nets, and the fishermen take the catch. \u00a0In return for this assistance, the \u00a0fishermen feed the choicest fish to the sharks. \u00a0I found proof of this communication online.<\/p>\n

Who are Aumakua?<\/h2>\n

Katherine Nichols wrote about \u201cSharks as \u2018aumakua'”, in an article for the \u00a0Honolulu Advertiser<\/a>.\u00a0 ‘Aumakua’ is a Hawaiian word for benevolent guardian spirits or family protectors. \u00a0Kahu (Shepherd or religious leader) \u00a0Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell Sr., explained that \u00a0“An aumakua was actually a dead ancestor\u2019s spirit that was deified into an entity.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>They could be clouds, trees or animals. \u00a0In ancient times, people either lived in the mountains or near the ocean.\u00a0 Hence, owls, eels and whales were popular incarnations of\u00a0 aumakua.<\/p>\n

This did not and does not mean that every owl, shark or whale that someone encounters is an aumakua. \u00a0And even if one of those animals happened to be an aumakua for someone, not all other members of that species would automatically be benevolent towards that individual. \u00a0Carol Silva, a researcher of Hawaiian culture explains that \u201cAumakua are identified very specifically by body markings, and are named. They are part of the family. There is a direct connection, a blood relationship.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

So, how do people know when an entity is their aumakua? \u00a0Silva says there is usually some sort of sign. \u00a0An aumkua can make itself known by behaving in a non-threatening manner, or even coming to the aid of a family member during a dangerous situation. \u00a0The\u00a0<\/em>recognition between the human and the animal is usually instantaneous and mutual.<\/p>\n

Kahu Maxwell recounts the story of a tour-boat that sank in the 1930s. \u00a0Sharks circled and all of the tourists were attacked and killed. \u00a0The captain of the ship started to chant and his aumakua appeared, offered his dorsal fin and carried the captain safely to shore.<\/p>\n

What is real?<\/h2>\n

It can be difficult to accept with our logical minds the validity of some of these beliefs. \u00a0I am not postulating that all Aboriginal beliefs are true. \u00a0What I am suggesting is that we open our minds to investigating them, without the prejudices we may have unconsciously ingrained in us.<\/p>\n

Indigenous beliefs and practices have historically been derided as demonic, superstitious or both. \u00a0Mike has told me that people did communicate with animals, and listened to their wisdom through dreams and visions. \u00a0Healers also learnt about the medicinal properties of plants through similar communications with plant-life.<\/p>\n

There was and is no hierarchy of life in an Aboriginal value-system. \u00a0Every being has a right to exist, and be treated appreciatively and respectfully. \u00a0This is in recognition of our interdependence and connection to the same source.<\/p>\n

It is really clear that other beings besides us, have intelligence and feelings. \u00a0They are not dumb animals or inanimate forms of life. \u00a0It\u2019s time to extend our respect and compassion to those we presume to dominate. \u00a0This means treating the animals that we encounter differently, including those that we rear for our consumption. \u00a0It\u2019s time to demand that our food-suppliers live in accordance with ethics of love, respect and balance. \u00a0We shouldn\u2019t diminish ourselves and other creatures, simply in the process of living.<\/p>\n
